The Empire State Ride is a 500+ mile adventure across New York State to end cancer. It’s packed full of exciting and unique opportunities, like the ability to see an entire state from the seat of your bike and a chance to make a real difference by advancing cancer research.
If you’re thinking about registering as a 2019 Empire State Rider, here’s everything you need to know about this challenge taking place from July 28 through August 3.
This year, there are two registration options available for all riders: weeklong and custom. Weeklong riders commit to riding all seven days, from NYC to Niagara Falls, and fundraising the required $3,500 minimum.
In contrast, custom riders commit to fundraising $500 for each day they ride. First, choose a city to start in: New York City, Stony Point, Barrytown, Schenectady, Utica, Weedsport or Spencerport. Then, pick however many days you’re able to ride and join the rest of the Empire State Riders on the journey to end cancer.
If you’re unable to take off an entire week, the custom option is a great way to participate in #ESR19 and still make an impact on the future of cancer research. If you’re looking to experience everything the Empire State Ride has to offer then the weeklong option is perfect for you.
Depending on what registration option you choose, your fundraising minimum will either be $3,500 (weeklong) or $500 per day (custom). Regardless, if you’re a little intimidated about having to fundraise, we have a ton of tips and tools to make it easier on you.
First, kick off your efforts by making a self donation. Then, let all your family, friends and colleagues know that you’re fundraising for cancer research. Promote it on social media and email everyone in your address book. Don’t forget to personalize your fundraising dashboard, download our mobile app (available on the App Store and Google Play) and integrate your fundraiser with Facebook.

When you become a road warrior, you’ll be cycling anywhere from 60 to 92 miles per day with varying elevation gains. While the 2019 route is still being finalized, check out the mileage details from 2018 to get a better sense of what the route will be similar to. The finalized route will be shared in early spring on our website and social media platforms so stay tuned for that.
In order to be physically and mentally in shape for the Empire State Ride, proper and consistent training, even in the colder months, is absolutely essential. To be prepared, riders must get as much seat time as possible, train indoors if weather does not permit for outdoor cycling, ride in hilly terrain and consult their primary care physician and a training coach.
